HTML Meta Tags is the code that displays information about your website to search engines. Each page on your site should have HTML meta content tags which outline the information contained in that page. Meta tags are necessary but by no means will they propel your website traffic. Meta & Title tags go between the <head> </head> tags of your html code.

 

Title tag

  • *NOT A META TAG * It is the top line of text you see when search engine results are returned. It is wise to use optimized keywords and phrases here also. The title tag is also what appears in the title bar of browsers and what will appear if someone saves your webpage as a favorite.

Description tag

  • Used to describe what the content of your page will be about. This tag is an opportunity for you to add content that will entice your market to visit your page. You have one shot here so make it a good one.

Keywords tag

  • I stress to all of my email marketing list subscribers the importance of keywords in not only their website content but also in blog posts, forum posts, articles, etc. The keywords tag is the tag that will tell search engines what the main points of your page content will be about. Remember, it is important that you don't over do keywords and phrases in your content. It is also important that the keywords in this tag are actually in your content.

When prospects use search engines and use keywords and phrases to look for a product or service the only way your site will show up is if your optimizing those same keywords and phrases in your website content, page title, meta tag description and meta tag keywords. This doesn't guarantee your site will appear first (that takes time and consistent marketing) but it will guarantee that your site is moving in the right direction to appear at the top of search engine results for particular keywords and phrases.

 

In order to effectively market your website(s) you have to master several tools which are at your disposal. Meta tags cost you nothing to configure and they can mean the difference between someone clicking on your website link or passing it by for another well written, better optimized website link.
